The Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra will present musicians in various small ensemble configurations across the Lower Mainland this February, with appearances in North Vancouver, Coquitlam and Surrey. This is chamber music with a colourful fusion twist, featuring Persian kamanche, santur and tombak, Arabic oud, Chinese erhu, Hungarian tárogatò, clarinet, cello, piano, and voice. Two “Sounds Global” concerts mark the culmination of the VICO’s 2016-17 Sounds Global Composers’ Workshop, held this year in North Vancouver and Surrey; these will feature the world premieres of new intercultural works developed by up-and-coming composers in collaboration with VICO musicians. The third event, a brunch/concert combo hosted by Pasta Polo Restaurant in Coquitlam, will be the VICO’s first ever appearance in the Tri-Cities.

  • All three February events are part of the VICO’s participation in “Welcome to the Arts”, an initiative of the Canada Council for the Arts, thanks to which arts organizations across Canada can offer free access to their 2016/17 programming for recently-arrived Syrian refugees. The VICO encourages anyone associated with an individual, group or organization that is sponsoring a Syrian family to share this information, and contact staff via info@vi-co.org if interested in obtaining complimentary tickets to these concerts.

The VICO is proud to have been described as “the United Nations of music” (CBC Radio). Audiences will experience Canadian music that is both rooted in ancient traditions and excitingly fresh to the ear; music that draws on the poetic best of many cultures, and builds bridges of imagination between them.
