The Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra (VICO) proudly presents an evening of adventurous contemporary classical music that weaves together strands from Chinese, Persian, European, and North American West Coast cultures into a fresh, uniquely Canadian tapestry of sound.

On November 14, the VICO Tentet, conducted by Janna Sailor, will perform an exciting programme of music by Canadian composers: As the first spring blossoms awaken through the snow by Rita Ueda, planh: de temps by Farshid Samandari, NightSong Dance by Mark Armanini (featuring soloist Charlie Lui on dizi), Passion’s Passage by Moshe Denburg, and Pareidolia by Farangis Nurulla-Khoja. Also on the bill: Mirage by Iranian composer Saeed Mirzazadeh

All of these innovative contemporary classical works were commissioned and developed by the VICO specifically for this Tentet configuration; several were premiered at prestigious music festivals in Taiwan and South Korea during the VICO’s first tour to Asia in spring 2024.

The VICO Tentet is a streamlined microcosm of the larger intercultural orchestra. It features Saina Khaledi (santour), Ali Razmi (tar), Douglas Hensley (oud), Liam Hockley (clarinet), Mark Takeshi McGregor (flute), Zhongxi Wu (sheng), Jun Rong (erhu), Sarah Kwok (viola), Mark Haney (contrabass), and Brian Nesselroad (percussion).
