In this exciting chamber concert, the VICO’s intercultural wind quintet performs the world premieres of new works created by participants in our 2025 Sounds Global Composers’ Workshop – composers not only from Vancouver and across Canada, but also as far away as Italy and Iran. International guest artist Erica Roozendaaal (accordion) presents a solo recital showcasing her versatility as a musical storyteller, passionate about creating new timbres, images and stories. She strives to touch, but also challenge the audience with (still) unheard composers, unusual sounds and surprising angles.

The VICO Summer Academy is back this year, and we can’t wait to show you what comes out of this one-of-a-kind creative intensive! Participating composers spend two weeks learning and developing new work, in collaboration with a distinguished faculty of VICO composer mentors, roster musicians, and international guests.

June 6 will feature the world premieres of brand new compositions for an intercultural chamber trio, performed by Lan Tung (erhu), Dai-Lin Hsieh (zheng), and Jonathan Bernard  (percussion).

June 7 will feature world premieres of brand new compositions for an intercultural tentet, performed by Saina Khaledi (santour), Ali Razmi (tar), Douglas Hensley (oud), Liam Hockley (clarinet), Paolo Bortolussi (flute), Zhongxi Wu (sheng), Jun Rong (erhu), Sarah Kwok (viola), Mark Haney (contrabass), and Brian Nesselroad (percussion).

Also on the bill: featured international guest Erica Roozendaal (accordion), who will perform Peigner Le Vif by Gerard Pesson (with Sarah Kwok – viola) as well as the world premiere of a new concerto for accordion and tentet by Farshid Samandari.
